Ministry of National Defense Announces Organization of 2nd Meeting of the ASEAN Defense Ministers and the ASEAN Defense Ministers Plus 2

PHNOM PENH: The General Department of Politics and Foreign Affairs of the Ministry of National Defense will hold the second meeting of the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Working Group (ADSOM WC) and the second meeting of the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Plus Working Group (ADSOM-Plus WG) from 28-29 March 2022 via videoconference.

In a press release issued on Monday, 28 March 2022, it was confirmed that the two meetings will be chaired by the Deputy Director General of the General Department of Politics and Foreign Affairs and Chair of the ASEAN Senior Defense Ministers' Working Group of Cambodia Lt. Gen. Lay Chenda, with the participation of the Chiefs of Staff of the Senior Ministers of Defense of ASEAN Member States, the Chairs of the ASEAN Senior Ministers of Defense from ‘Plus’ Countries, and the ASEAN Secretariat.

The ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Working Group Meeting will finalize Cambodia's three conceptual documents and the terms of reference of the Center for Excellence in Information and Cyber Security of the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting, which was tentatively agreed upon in the previous February meeting.

The meeting will also discuss some necessary work, such as a discussion on the establishment of relations between the Southeast Asian Maritime Law Enforcement Initiative and the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting in the field of maritime security, and a discussion paper on the reflection of military history to promote sustainable peace.

The meeting will continue to consider three key documents. First, the Draft Joint Statement of the Phnom Penh Vision on the Role of National Defense Institutions in Supporting Post-Covid-19 Reconstruction, second, the Draft Joint Statement of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting and the third, the draft Joint Statement of the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting plus.

The meeting will also discuss preparations for the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting (ADSOM) and the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADSOM-Plus), scheduled for mid-May, building up towards the 16th ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting in June.
